From Small Alleyways to Victory Podium: Syrian Orphan's Dreams Take Flight Through KSrelief Support

Details

"Running around the neighborhood felt freeing. There is a sense of endless possibilities when I run – like the faster I move and the quicker my feet hit the ground, the clearer my dreams become. I imagine myself standing steady on the winner's podium, my family and friends shouting my name, with my beloved Syrian flag wrapped around my chest."

These were the words of Mohammed Ismail, a 7-year-old boy who lives in Northern Syria with his mother. After losing his father at a young age, Mohammed lost his main cheerleader during the crucial early stages of childhood development, when having both parents for encouragement is essential. Fortunately, Mohammed found that support and much more.

Mohammed is part of the Amaan project – an initiative launched by King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) that provides financial sponsorships and psychological and social support to orphans, while also empowering orphan mothers economically through vocational training programs and essential tools.

Mohammed eagerly participated in all social and sports activities organized professionally by the project, demonstrating the spirit of young dreamers who aspire to win sports championships one day. When he heard about an organized running marathon championship, Mohammed immediately registered to participate. The daily training sessions with his coach, combined with encouraging words and motivation to perform better, made Mohammed feel valued. Having that male voice cheering him on was something Mohammed had never experienced since his father's passing, but deeply missed.

On the day of the final race, Mohammed was ready to claim the championship – and he did exactly that.

"On race day, I ran with all the energy I had. Whenever I remembered my mother's encouragement and my coach's belief in me, I found greater strength and ran faster than I ever thought possible. When my name was announced as one of the winners and I received the trophy, I was in disbelief. I felt stronger and capable of achieving anything if I worked hard and strived for it," said Mohammed.

This is precisely why the Amaan project differs from other orphan support initiatives. KSrelief doesn't stop at financial contributions, despite their importance, recognizing that monetary aid alone cannot be the complete solution for ensuring happier, sustained lives for these children.

KSrelief views the social and psychological aspects of care for orphans, along with support provided to their mothers through vocational training programs, as equally important as financial contributions. While financial aid addresses immediate life necessities, the social and psychological support provided to orphans and their caregivers offers sustained assistance with lifelong results and impact on both the orphan and caregiver.

Social activities – sports and otherwise – are essential, particularly for youth. KSrelief understands that without a nurturing environment, orphans often struggle with feelings of isolation and abandonment, which impact their wellbeing and ability to thrive in society. By organizing sports festivals, vocational training, and other activities, KSrelief ensures orphans have opportunities for joy, healing, and personal growth that extend far beyond traditional aid.

"The Amaan project taught me to believe in myself and showed me that big dreams may start in small alleyways, but they can soar far if they find someone who believes in them and works to support them," said Mohammed. Such testimony from a beneficiary confirms that KSrelief has achieved the project's core objectives.
