The medical and surgical team from the Saudi Program for Conjoined Twins has officially begun the separation process for Egyptian conjoined twin "Mohamed Abdulrahman Gomaa," who is 7 months and 28 days old. This operation is taking place at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard, Riyadh, following directives from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Upon the twins' arrival in the Kingdom last March, the medical team conducted thorough examinations. They determined that the parasitic twin is attached to Mohamed in the back, lower chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah noted that the parasitic twin has no chance of survival due to the lack of essential life components, such as a heart and head, alongside congenital defects that cannot be corrected.
The operation is planned to be performed in six stages, taking approximately 11 hours, involving the expertise of 26 specialists in various fields, including anesthesia, neurosurgery, and pediatric surgery. The expected success rate of the procedure exceeds 70%.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah expressed his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince for their unwavering support of the program, emphasizing that this assistance is crucial for maintaining the highest standards of medical care. The program aims to continue enhancing its expertise and treatment protocols to solidify the Kingdom's status as a global center for medical excellence.
