NEW YORK, UNITED STATES: Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), recently participated in a panel discussion entitled “Responding to the Urgent Humanitarian Needs in the Horn of Africa”. The event was organized by the governments of Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom and Qatar, in cooperation with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the governments of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The discussion was held on the margins of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, at UN headquarters in New York City.

During his remarks to the panel, Dr. Al Rabeeah stated that countries in the Horn of Africa are facing a number of urgent humanitarian crises; these crises have been exacerbated over the past two years by prolonged drought and other emergencies which have led to famine and widespread loss of life, particularly among children and other vulnerable groups.

Dr. Al Rabeeah stressed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always responded to various international crises, particularly in the Horn of Africa. He stated that Saudi Arabia’s support to the region in 2021 and 2022 amounted to USD 15 million, and that the goal of the assistance was to alleviate the suffering of people in need in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. The Kingdom, he added, also launched a charitable fundraising campaign to address the region’s most urgent needs.

Dr. Al Rabeeah concluded his remarks by expressing his hopes that the humanitarian community’s collective efforts would alleviate the suffering of even more people in need in the Horn of Africa.
