HADRAMAWT, YEMEN: The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) recently launched a Volunteer Medical Campaign for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at Seiyun General Hospital in Yemen’s Hadramawt governorate. Saudi volunteers from various medical specialties participated in the campaign, which was held from 30 July to 6 August 2022. Twenty-four surgeries were conducted, all of which were successful, and examinations carried out for a total of 160 patients.

Abdulhadi Al Tamimi, the Deputy Governor of Hadramawt, along with the Director General of the Yemeni Ministry of Public Health and Population’s Office, Dr. Hani Al Amoudi, and the Acting Director of the Seiyun General Hospital, Dr. Hussain Salem Al Kthiri, recently visited Seiyun General Hospital to conduct a follow-up of the campaign’s progress.

During their visit, Deputy Governor Al Tamimi and the rest of the delegation had the opportunity to observe the medical and technical staff at work, and also to meet with KSrelief’s Volunteer Program Specialist, Yousef Abdul-Alim Al Mutlaq. Al-Mutlaq informed the visitors about the work being done by the campaign’s team, in close cooperation with the Yemeni Ministry of Health and the Seiyun General Hospital Authority. Mr. Al-Mutlaq also confirmed that the campaign is progressing according to schedule, thanks to the high level of cooperation between the volunteer medical team and Seiyun General Hospital staff from all departments, including laboratory services and radiology.

The Deputy Governor thanked KSrelief for its continuous support for the people of Yemen across all humanitarian sectors, adding that KSrelief remains a supply bridge to meet many of the needs of the Yemeni people, and that ongoing humanitarian support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can only strengthen the already close ties between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The Deputy Governor added that this second campaign was vital, as these specialized surgeries were simply not available in Hadramawt because of the extremely challenging living and economic conditions in the region. He further explained that KSrelief’s intervention will alleviate the suffering of many patients, particularly burn victims and other serious cases requiring surgical intervention.

Al Tamimi urged the local medical staff to take advantage of this campaign to work with and learn from their fellow distinguished doctors from Saudi Arabia. He also encouraged all Yemenis suffering from burn scarring and other conditions requiring plastic surgery intervention to seek out the services being provided by KSrelief’s volunteer program.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Public Health and Population’s Office in Hadramawt, Dr. Hani Al Amoudi, praised the efforts of the medical team participating in the campaign, from receiving cases in the clinic to conducting operations. He explained that KSrelief is an active partner for the health sector in Hadramawt, providing distinguished medical services to patients in need of their care.

Acting Director of Seiyun General Hospital, Dr. Hussain Al Kthiri, stressed the importance of this localized campaign to enable patients to receive the care they need without having to travel long distances; the care is also free of charge to all beneficiaries. He added that the campaign is also an excellent chance for local medical cadres to receive advanced surgical training from the Saudi volunteer team.

KSrelief’s Al Mutlaq expressed his happiness that KSrelief has been able to provide this advanced care for Yemenis in need, and thanked all of the parties who had contributed to the success of the campaign.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia supports the Yemeni medical sector through the ongoing work of KSrelief. Saudi Arabia continues to promote volunteerism in the country in accordance with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
