Rabie Moqbel’s Story: Life after Displacement

Details

There is perhaps nothing more painful and difficult than losing your home and your job and having to move with your children to an unfamiliar place with an unknown future.

“Life after the displacement was not easy at all. I lived in constant fear of losing my job and not being able to provide my family with basic necessities. Simply securing food and water for my children each day was a crazy journey”. Thirty-year-old Rabie tells the painful story of his life after displacement, which was made even more difficult after he was severely injured by a landmine on his way home one day.

“"In seconds,” he explained “I found myself rising from the ground and falling again. I did not realize what had happened to me at the time, but I felt as if my feet were on fire. When I looked down, there was blood everywhere, and after that, it got even worse."

Rabie’s left leg was amputated due to the incident. He lost his job and could not move or walk to look for other employment to provide for his family. Rabie was overwhelmed with despair. Then he learned about the Artificial Limbs Center through a television channel, and he began to hope that perhaps if he could get an artificial leg, he might be able to walk and possibly even work again.

Rabie was received at the center by the technical staff. After a doctor reviewed his condition, he was fitted for a prosthesis, and the training phase began. After only four days, Rabie was standing on his own and learning to walk again.

According to specialists at the Artificial Limbs Center, "Rabie was so happy when he talked to us about going out to look for a job now that he had a prosthetic limb and could walk again! He expressed his deep gratitude to the center for the services it provides to people in Taiz who desperately need help".
