The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, organized a workshop from November 18-19, 2025, in Riyadh. The workshop focused on the nexus between humanitarian action, development, and peace in responding to global humanitarian crises. It featured participation from Dr. Hana Omar, the Director of the Center's Partnerships and International Relations Department, along with a delegation from the UNDP, representatives from international humanitarian organizations, and delegates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Saudi Fund for Development, the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, Prince Sultan University, and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies.
During the workshop, Dr. Hana Omar emphasized the need to fully enhance the interconnected approach between humanitarian relief, development, and peace, as this contributes to building resilience and reducing vulnerability in affected communities. She affirmed that the Kingdom addresses urgent humanitarian needs not only by providing assistance but also by tackling root causes through diplomacy and strategic interventions.
Dr. Hana cited Yemen as an example to illustrate the nexus approach that the Center follows, highlighting initiatives focused on livelihoods, solar energy projects, social cohesion programs, and enhancing resilience and sustainable development, in partnership with the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen. She noted that this comprehensive strategy allows for an integrated approach to delivering aid during conflicts.
The workshop included a comprehensive overview of the nexus between humanitarian action, development, and peace, focusing on its importance and practical applications. It also delved into case studies of specific countries and regions in the Middle East and North Africa, including Yemen, Syria, Palestine, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and Asia. Additionally, the workshop addressed the current obstacles and challenges faced in applying the nexus approach, the main risks to humanitarian and developmental responses, and how improving synergy among actors in humanitarian, peace, and development fields can help meet humanitarian needs, prevent conflicts, and achieve recovery.
This workshop is part of the effective collaboration between the King Salman Relief Center and UN organizations and their specialized humanitarian agencies, contributing to the exchange of expertise and the development of more effective mechanisms for responding to urgent international crises.
