Acute Malnutrition Impacts Children in Yemen

Details

Asrar, who is from the Yemeni city of Aden, is 38 years old and has three children. Her family, like many in Yemen, struggles to survive. Her husband works in a municipal office, but his salary is paid irregularly, and often barely covers the costs of the family’s basic needs – including sufficient food.

Asrar's youngest child, Jamal, was first diagnosed with acute malnutrition when he was six months old. For months, Jamal was weak and unable to play like other children; he refused to eat most of the time. Months later, with supplemental food support from the World Food Programme, Jamal's health improved. But now he is back in treatment for severe malnutrition, because high food prices are once again preventing Asrar and her husband from buying enough food to feed their family.

Jamal has joined the KSrelief-sponsored World Food Programme’s nutrition program, and visits the clinic twice a month for checkups, but his future is uncertain.
